It can be hard to find interesting and engaging things to do with children in winter when it’s cold and dark, especially activities that don’t cost the Earth. If you’re saving up for Christmas, you probably don’t have loads of money to spare, but sitting indoors bored isn’t particularly appealing! To help you keep your child entertained in the colder months, here a Nursery in South Kensington explores five low-cost activities you can try.

Arts & Crafts
Getting creative is always a good way to keep children engaged and active, especially when the weather’s bad and you can’t get outside. You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy materials though – just hunt around your home for everyday items you can use to make a model or incorporate into a collage. Your child could also find objects to draw or paint, or gather winter leaves to use for a craft project.
Baking and cooking
Why not explore some new recipes with your child and get them involved in aspects of baking and cooking? They’ll love getting messy and helping you weigh and measure ingredients, and then seeing the finished result. This is also a great learning activity as you can help them practise their Maths skills and learn about the scientific processes involved in cooking food. You can also teach them about seasonal food and the kinds of things people eat more of during winter.
Play in the snow
Children find snow endlessly fascinating, so when the white stuff arrives take the opportunity to get outside and have some fun. Make sure you wrap up warm and take a sledge if you have one. You could build an igloo or snowman or just run around throwing snowballs at each other. You’ll make some amazing memories.
Puddle jumping
For a completely free activity, pull your wellies and waterproofs on and go and find some big puddles to jump in. Kids love stuff like this as they get to have fun doing something they’re not normally allowed to do. Why not join in and rediscover your inner child? Your child will love seeing you get involved.
Stargazing
Clear winter skies provide the perfect opportunity for gazing at the heavens, and you don’t need an expensive telescope to enjoy it. Just download a stargazing app and use it to learn more about what you’re looking at. As it doesn’t get dark until late in summer, winter is a great chance for your child to learn about our solar system and see it first-hand.
Fun and learning don’t have to stop in winter – you just need to prepare and use your imagination!
