One life skill that parents must explore with children is resilience. It gives children the ability to get back on their feet after their setbacks, and as things in life aren’t always smooth sailing, your child will likely encounter a few of these challenges. Below is some advice from a private primary school on how to raise a resilient child.

Give Them a Chance
To help your child build their resilience, you will first need to give them the opportunity to attempt challenges and encounter difficulties. It’s understandable that as a parent you will instinctively want to step in, but they will need to do this themselves so that they can learn how to deal with problems in the future. Of course, if they need your help, you should be on hand and be there to provide emotional support and reassurance.
How to Problem Solve
When problems arise, your child must know how to deal with them. The first step is to identify the problem which then can help them to come up with solutions.
Rebuild Their Confidence
To follow on from the point above, the key to resilience is self-belief. This can take a hit when things go wrong, and they experience setbacks. You will need to do work around rebuilding their self-confidence, be reassuring and gear them up to try again.
Set a Good Example
Another thing that you must do is set a good example. Children need strong parental figures and look up to their parents. Therefore, to help your child develop resilience, it’s vital that you live by your teachings and try to not run away from your problems.
Struggles
Seeing their parents go through struggles can also help children as it shows them that they are normal and a part of life.
Encourage Them to Speak About Their Emotions
When things go wrong it can be stressful and bring on difficult emotions. Talking about how they feel can help them to deal with their emotions better, navigate problems and exercise resilience.
Mindfulness
What can also help is mindfulness which is synonymous with mental health and stress relief. There are various techniques that you can explore with your child. They all essentially aim to do the same thing and that is helping you engage with the present moment.
Asking for Help
Lastly, teach your child that it’s okay to ask for help. Sometimes it’s the wiser thing to do and there is no shame in asking for it.
