5 things to consider when you want to move house

This is a collaborative post

Are you lying in bed awake thinking you might move house? Have you been scrolling Rightmove and found a dream home and now you are trying to work out if a house move is possible for you and your family? Before considering selling your current home, could you turn it into an Airbnb and make enough to pay your mortgage or for some extra income? Contact an Airbnb management company for some advice on what you could charge and the popularity of your area. Here are 5 things you may not have thought of that you need to consider when deciding about moving house.

Moving costs

When you are looking to move house it isn’t just the cost of the new house you need to consider, is it? You need to remember to factor in your solicitor fees, surveys, removal costs, estate agent fees and lots more. Don’t forget you shouldn’t be moving rubbish to your new home so be sure to look at skip hire and get rid of anything you no longer need!

Look for the cheapest of each of these options to save yourself money so the cheapest man and a van in London, an online conveyancing solicitor, the best value surveys etc and you can save quite a bit of money.

Utilities in the new home

Does your new home cost more to heat? Does it have a water meter? What is the council tax band in the area you are considering? All these things need factoring in to decide if you are looking to move house.

Schools and Doctors in the area

Both schools and doctors generally have catchment areas so you need to think about which school or doctor’s surgery you will need to register with and if it can meet your needs. This is especially important if you are at the time of your child’s life when they are about to change schools and could rule them out of certain schools if you move out of the area.

The stress and choosing new furniture

Moving house is one of the most stressful times of our lives. Can you cope with this? If you are not sure if you can then maybe a house move isn’t right for you right now? Choosing new furniture can often cause stress and arguments. Check out if you need new storage or if you can just organise your rooms better!

Money

Will you be able to afford your dream home, not just the moving costs I have talked about above but the ongoing mortgage payments or the rental costs? Looking at online budget calculators can help you to decide if this is a long-term possibility as moving house isn’t easy, you don’t want to find you are somewhere you can not afford! Could you perhaps consider budget renovations to make your current home perfect?

What is your dream home like? Have you found any lovely homes you would like to share? Do comment below as I love looking at houses with character or perhaps you have seen a really unusual house? Let me know!
