How to get rid of dark circles under the eyes

A woman with straight brown hair and glossy nails smiles at the camera, touching her face with both hands. She has smooth, glowing skin—showing no under eye dark circles—against a plain white background.

Dark circles are an issue for many of us right now, they certainly are for me! Dark circles are those under-eye shadows that show up under your eyes, usually on a day when you want to look nice and not like you are tired! I know for me it is the days where I am rushing to go somewhere and want to look nice that I wake up with dark circles!

A woman wearing a striped turtleneck sweater and jeans sits on the edge of a bed with her head resting on her hand, appearing thoughtful or tired, as subtle dark circles under her eyes hint she’s hoping to get rid of fatigue. The room is softly lit and has minimalist decor.

However, it turns out there could be many more things causing your dark circles.

Before you decide to focus on making sure that you don’t get dark circles, it’s first important to understand various reasons why they show in the first place. Then you can find appropriate solutions that help you get rid of them easily.

  1. Rest – Tiredness and a lack of sleep can be one of the reasons for the dark circles under your eyes. Not sleeping well through the night can make you look paler, which may make your dark circles feel hazier. One of the ways to calm yourself down if you often struggle to fall asleep early is to put slices of cucumbers over your eyes. This along with playing your favourite music can soothe you enough to fall asleep happily.
  1. Cold – Dilated under eye blood vessels have also been known as one of the reasons why dark circles might show up one day. You need to put something cold, for example a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth, to ensure that those veins get constricted on time.
  1. Straining your eyes too much – If your job involves looking at computer or mobile screens too much, you can struggle with dark circles often. That can be another primary reason why the blood vessels around your eyes enlarge and the skin around your eyes might also darken with time.
  1. Allergies – Scientists have proven that some allergies can result in dark circles under your eyes as well. Histamine released in your body due to allergies can also make your blood vessels enlarge under your eyes. Taking antihistamines can help.
  1. Almond oil and Vitamin E – Blending equivalent measures of almond oil and vitamin E cream and before sleeping gently rubbing the mixture into the dark circles. Wash your face early in the morning. Practice it daily.
  2. Tea bags – Try soaking two teabags in warm water and then cooling the bags in the fridge for a couple of moments. Put a bag on each eye. After five minutes, remove the teabags and flush the area with cold water.

What your doctor may recommend for dark circles?

If you decide to consult a doctor for your dark circles because the above is not working, he/she might suggest many things – based on the dark circles you have and the reasons why you might have them, the treatment might differ.

Let’s talk about some treatments that your doctor might suggest you for your dark circles:

  • Light complexion cream – To clear under-eye hyperpigmentation, a skin specialist may recommend a skin cream. A few of these creams are available over the counter but they may be less effective than the prescription only options
  • Laser treatment – This is more expensive so is much more likely to only be available as a last resort and may be only available to private patients.
  • Fillers – Again this is expensive and likely to be something you would need to pay privately for. It may be available without referrel but do check out the credentials of anyone who is going to inject your face to avoid being one of those horror stories!

Easy hacks to practice at home

  1. Focus on healthy eating and a good diet
  1. Ensure your body has appropriate amounts of all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Before trying these things if it is not a regular thing that you have dark circles try not to worry and perhaps consider just covering with make up, a good concealer should do the job temporarily.
