Teaching Your Child to Resist Peer Pressure

Peer pressure happens to lots of children, especially in their teenage years, which is why it’s important for parents to take charge and see where they can help their children with these pressures. Here are some ways you can help your child with their pressures with this guide from an independent girls school in Hertfordshire.

A group of four people, including two children and two adults, ride bicycles on a paved road in a park. Demonstrating good parenting, all wear helmets as they enjoy a sunny day among the trees, teaching children safety and how to resist peer pressure.

Talk to them about the consequences

An often sure-fire way of showing your child how peer pressure can become a problem is by showing them what could happen if they did succumb to the pressure. If they committed an illegal act, show them what could happen, or if they consumed alcohol what can happen to the body. There’s also the risk of teacher involvement and serious repercussions as a result; showing your child this can mean they’re aware of the worst-case scenario and can make them think twice.

Teach your child to say no

Having a child that’s able to say no will relieve you of a lot of stress later down the line. You can teach this through modelling rejection in daily life – saying yes to everything your child asks from you can build a dependency on you to complete things for them. Being stricter with requests will teach them that they can do the same thing in difficult situations they face.

Understand who your child hangs around with

A lot of the work can be done by learning who your child hangs around with in the first place. Your child’s friends could be a group of children that like to take more risks and explore different things, whereas your child is a bit more reserved and wants to focus on their studies. Use your judgement to see if your child needs help, or move them towards finding new friends that’ll make them feel more comfortable.
