2022 is here and hopefully, we will be able to get back to normality. There are many events planned for 2022 and a couple that have been postponed from 2021. Because of the current situation, there is no promise these events will happen but here are some dates to add to your diary.
Sporting Events
February 4th – February 20th will see the Winter Olympics in Beijing. These Winter Olympics will see athletes from all over the world competing in 109 events. Similarly to the 2020 Summer Olympics, there will be measures put in place to prevent the spread of Covid. For example, athletes have to remain in a ‘bubble’ and some events happening behind closed doors.
The UEFA Women’s Euros are taking part from the 6th – 30th July. Originally postponed from 2021, 16 teams will fight it out for the title of best in Europe. Sweden and Germany are the favourites to win.
July 28th – August 8th will see the best athletes in the Commonwealth coming to the UK to compete in the Commonwealth Games. Athletes from 72 nations will compete in 20 different sports such as athletics, cycling and swimming. If you enjoyed the Olympics, I would recommend watching the Commonwealth Games.
The FIFA world cup will happen from 21 November – 18th December. If you are a fan of football you can’t miss it. Unlike previous world cups, this one is being held in winter. This is because this world cup is being held in Qatar, and their temperatures in summer were deemed too high to play in.
New Zealand will host the 2021 Rugby World cup. This is the women’s version of the Rugby World Cup. In 2021 it was postponed as a result of the Corona Virus and it will now be held 8th October – 12th November. Also due to the Corona Virus, it is likely to be held behind closed doors. England and New Zealand are world number 1 and 2. So would be the ones to watch.
Political Events
Many countries will hold general elections during 2022. For example, France will hold their election on 10th February with current president Macron being the current favourite to win. South Korea will hold their general election on March 9th with the Philippines on May 9th. Then followed by Sweden on 11th September.
Scientific Events
Many scientific events are expected to take place in 2022. For Example In June the European Space Agency plan to send their spacecraft called JUICE. JUICE stands for Jupiter icy moons explorer and will study 3 of Jupiter’s moons. These are Ganymede, Calisto and Europa. Because they are all suspected of having water under their surface, they are potentially habitable. This craft will give us more information on them. Although this is craft is being launched in 2022, it won’t reach Jupiter for about 8 years.
Anniversaries
On February 6th Queen Elizabeth will mark her platinum jubilee. This means she has reigned for 70 years and will be the first British monarch to reach this milestone. England will be holding events all year. Including a 4 day bank holiday weekend.
On 14th August Pakistan will celebrate 75 years of independence. Pakistan gained independence from British rule on 14th August 1947. This day has become a public holiday that is celebrated annually. Similarly, India will celebrate 75 years of independence from British rule on 15th August. Again this is a public holiday that involves the raising of the Indian flag and a speech from the president.
