Mindfulness is a great thing to explore with your child at any age. It’s a great skill to teach your child about when they’re young, due to the number of uphill struggles they could well face. That in itself is a good reason why you should try to pick it up together when they are around toddler or infant age.
It’s often something that children might think is only for the grown-ups, but it’s actually a really important factor that will develop your child’s skills further. Here are some ways you can explore this skill with your child.

Explore the best ways of learning to appreciate silence
When you’re a parent it feels like every waking moment is full of noise and requests from your child. It may feel like an impossible task at times because of it! Take your time and sit with your child for smaller, calm moments and work towards longer sessions of quiet. When you’re having quiet moments it doesn’t mean your child can’t think or do absolutely nothing, it’s more about taking a moment to think, breathe and look to the past or future.
Try mindful eating
We’re all a bit guilty of looking at our food, not really appreciating it and wolfing it down – especially when we’re hungry! For children this is a good opportunity to try and take in what they’re eating (yes, even if they are chicken nuggets). Ask your child what they think of the different textures and how they taste to them. How do they feel when they eat these foods as well? This can give them a greater connection to what they’re eating and how it can improve their health.
Explore pastoral care
Often something your child will come across in schools, pastoral care is a form of care used to protect a child’s spiritual and mental well-being. In having pastoral care you’ll find that your child becomes a lot more connected to the world, as well as having a better grasp of what they enjoy and how they can overcome problems through mindfulness. It’s very popular in schools for this reason – to help give your child a greater sense of their skills and how they can manage their emotions.
Mindfulness is a key element to a child’s development that can really shape how your child grows and flourishes. Aside from their academic improvements, you’ll find that your child is a lot more reliable and in tune with their emotions. It’s a great skill you can teach your child at any age.
