This is a collaborative post
As your child grows up, they will begin to make friends and encounter situations where they need to tread carefully. As humans, we have a natural instinct to help others and show kindness. This is something that can be confusing for children but nevertheless something that they are capable of, given that they understand the social cues and signs. We have teamed up with a London prep school to share tips on raising a compassionate child.

Recognising the Signs
Emotions are complicated but there are a few tell-tale signs that can help your child distinguish the differences and be a better friend. Cartoons can help in this area by exposing them to a range of different emotions. This can teach them how to avoid causing upset and other not-so-nice feelings by helping them develop an understanding of good and bad behaviours.
Be Patient
While your child will be able to point out the different emotions after some work, it may take time for them to understand why they are felt. This all depends on where they are in their development which is why it’s important for you to be patient as a parent.
Be a Compassionate Parent
Being a parent is stressful, to say the least. It can be frustrating when you have a million things to do but have a child that won’t cooperate. Being compassionate towards them will set an example of how to treat others and be mindful of their feelings. An example of this would be to remind them in advance that you need to leave when out instead of pulling them away when refusing to do so.
Believe that Your Child Can Show Compassion
All children are capable of being kind. Labelling a child as a naughty or bad child can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy where they accept their label and go down a dark path.
