This is a collaborative post

My office is currently in the dining room so I don’t really have a proper office however we are soon moving house. This will mean I have my own office at last. I would have had one sooner but due to covid, our spare room had to become my partner’s office as he needs privacy for his work so the plans to turn it into my office had to be put aside! Now I can finally design the perfect office for me.

What I need from my new office

My new office needs to be somewhere which will also be a bit of a photography area too so in our new home it is quite a large room I am turning into my office. There are a few things that are important to me in designing it.

The items of furniture I am looking at are simple and functional because that is what is important to me. I have looked at custom made office furniture, budget shops and basically everywhere that sells desks in my quest to find the perfect desk. The one I currently have is from IKEA and whilst it is ideal in many ways, in others it isn’t quite right!

I am also looking for a large drawer unit to store all my photography backgrounds in (so they can stay flat) and my props. Currently, they are in a number of smaller sets of drawers and a nightmare to find when I need them so this will be perfect.

Another essential in my office will be some shelves for all my recipe books that I like to use for inspiration, my notebooks (I seem to have hundreds and won’t be needing to buy any for years!) and of course larger props!

Decorating my new office

The room I have chosen for my workspace is great for natural light which is perfect for photography and also I am going to change the light fitting to include spotlights to help with photography too.

The walls are currently white but I am hoping to get one of the walls papered in a brick wallpaper to be the perfect backdrop for photos! I am so excited about this as I currently if I want a backdrop like that, have to blue-tack a wallpaper sample to the wall behind the table I am using for photos!

How will these changes help me?

By having my own space I am hoping that I will be less distracted by other things like cooking tea, putting the washing on or, as I am today, putting up the Christmas tree! I am really hoping that I will get so much more done every day, and probably in less time because of the lack of distractions.

Another benefit I am hoping to achieve from having my own office in the house is that I will be able to draw a better line between family time and work time. Sometimes I am all too aware that my other half doesn’t have my full attention when we are watching TV as I am busy adding something to my to-do list or similar. I think with my office in a separate room I am hoping we have more time as a couple and I find the distinction between work and family time easier.
