As your child grows up, they’ll be exposed to a range of different social situations. Teaching them how to show gratitude is an important part of preparing them for this as it helps to show how much we care and appreciate others. This can help them to build and maintain strong, lasting friendships. We have teamed up with a private school in Buckinghamshire to share 5 ways that you can explore gratitude with your child.

Remind Them to Say Please and Thank You

Manners are the simplest way to show appreciation. By reminding your child to use them, you can help them to be courteous and make it a habit. even for free days out, they should say thank you when they enjoy themselves.

Pay Attention to Small Acts of Kindness

There is so much that we have to be thankful for in our everyday lives. By paying attention to small acts of kindness and verbalising gratitude, you can teach your child to take notice and appreciate the smaller blessings in life too.

Embody What You Want to See

Parents have the greatest influence on their children, and they directly impact the way that they behave. You can be a positive role model for your child by doing the above to teach them how to deal with situations where others do nice things for them.

Say Grace

Taking a moment to acknowledge and say thanks for the nourishing food that you have before eating is a way of expressing gratitude. It’s not exclusive to religious people and can be practised by all families. This daily act can get your child in the habit of reflecting and being more mindful.

Journaling

Journals are more than just places to document your day. They give children an outlet to share their thoughts and feelings. The act of journaling can get children to reflect on the nice things that they have and help them to be more grateful.
